Many people are able to fluently speak and understand Tamil but are not as advanced when it comes to reading or writing.
This stops many from exploring the world of Tamil literature.

Our diaspora friendly Tamil Literature Study Group is designed so participants can collectively explore Tamil Literature, with curated resources, through collaboration, and discussions allowing for self-discovery of ancient Tamil wisdom.

Check If This Study Group
Is Right For You:
Who is the study group meant for?
The Tamil diaspora often finds themselves in a unique in-between phase with the language:
-
Some can read Tamil but struggle to speak it.
-
Others can speak fluently but find reading difficult.
This study group is designed specifically for those in this in-between phase who wish to bridge the gap and deepen their connection to Tamil.

This study group is ideal for those who...

-
Can read the Tamil script at a basic level (meaning you can at least slowly sound out words - fluency is not required)
-
Are familiar with written or pure Tamil (the Tamil used in speeches, books, or on the news)
-
Are ready to actively participate, analyze and discuss Tamil in-sights within a small group. We have curated resources to aid in your learning journey!

Although we are discussing and referring to translations in English, a basic understanding and exposure of written Tamil will help with your understanding of the kurals.

Do I have to participate?

A: Yes. Participants will collaborate, discuss, and raise questions together with their camera turned on during the Study Group. Don't worry we have curated resources to add to your learning experience!

What texts do you cover?

A: We are starting with the Thirukural.
The Thirukural is a world renowned collection of ancient 7 word poems known as a guide for life through its three sections/books on honour, wealth and love.
The Thirukural has been called one of history's greatest books on ethics and morals.

Why is this a Study Group format?

The average Tamil can not read ancient Tamil texts and simply explain them without referring to a dictionary or others' interpretations.

In English alone there are over 50 interpretations for one Tamil text like the Thirukkural.

In order to truly understand the meaning of these ancient texts we need to explore them ourselves.
This includes discussing the cultural significance, modern day relevance and issues that arise with translations.

Is this study group suitable for native Tamil speakers?

A: The goal of this study group is to gather those interested in Tamil literature but are unable to read and understand the insights on their own.
We welcome everyone. Consider whether this study group is right for you as sessions will move at a slower pace and be conducted mainly in English.

How long do sessions run for?

A: Our study group runs for 6 weeks. Each session will be 2 hours.

The Study is Sold Out - what do I do?

A: We intentionally limit the number of participants to fewer than 15 per session to ensure a collaborative and engaging environment.

If the study is sold out, we encourage you to join the waitlist or sign up for updates about future sessions.
